Had our first frost this AM. Have not seen a Hummingbird for the last week. On a walk with my dog today, was picking up dozens of Wooly Bear caterpillars from the road to toss into the safer wooded ravine along the road. |AskaGuide|2009-10-19

Here is Malcolm's recipe for freshly hunted Squirrel: (from Marilyn's steak recipe) marinate them in red wine then grill them. To clean them, just start at the rib cage and slice it open all the way down the bottom and pull out the insides (don't cut the intestines or bladder if you see it) then cut under the skin under each leg to the back feet, cut around the ankle cut off the tail and starting at the feet just pull it out of it's skin. Then cut off head it's ready. Par boil for 30 minutes, dip in flower and pepper and lightly fry it-great eating. Make up a small amount of gravy with the left over pan. We will soon have a video of this on my SadieMedia channel. Check it out!|AskaGuide|2009-9-6

Two of the most mature of our several Yoshino Cherry Prunus x yedoensis trees in our yard are already starting to drop blossoms. They bloomed over a week ago, the recent weather has seen day highs in the 60s with nightly lows in the 30s. The bees are buzzing all about these gorgeous pink trees. Pink flowering quince is blooming – Chaenomeles. Pink flowers appeared on bare branches of this thorny shrub. It certainly brightens the winter landscape when the only other things blooming are our forsythia, daffodills, and cherry. The leaves will appear as spring progresses, first as burgundy foliage then maturing to green.|AskaGuide|2008-3-30

Can't help you with keepin' the varmints away except for the usual suggestions: gun, electric fence or traps, etc. Be glad you have a garden and are able to harvest any amount to supplement what you may have to purchase at the grocery store that any more mostly comes from the world food supply. The US does not feed the world any more. They feed us. Ingredients in processed food may come from a whole bunch of countries including China. Keep growing organic food free of pesticides and let the raccoons or deer have a bite too.|FlowerPower|2007-8-14

Nice site, but it needs some activity and a little consolidation of blogs/journals. I have an organic tomato garden with heritage tomatoes that I am proud of, here in the mountains of Georgia, but some biting varmint keeps taking bites out of the ripe ones to the extent that they are ruined. We have a scary stuffed scarecrow person overseeing the tomato patch, but the varmint obviously ignores it. Any ideas out there, fellow askaguide members?|tomtomato|2007-8-9
